Tax Refund Process After Moving Abroad
A tax refund of €11,424 was received after navigating the complex M-form process for expatriates from the Netherlands. The experience highlighted the challenges of the tax system, including the requirement to be physically present in the Netherlands to file.

In 2025 I moved from the Netherlands to Indonesia and I've filed my last tax return this week (kinda took 6 months, wtf it is sooo difficult bullshit) and got a €11,424 tax refund 🐐💴.
I've no idea how the Netherlands tax system works, but if you move out in the middle of the year you get into a situation where you've dramatically overpaid taxes and you can get it back if you send that M-form.
€11,424 is coming back home to me ❤️
That M-Form is kind of a joke. I think it means migration form or something, and for some reason everything about it works in a way to push you to give up on it and never get your overpaid money back.
Most bullshit parts about it:
- you can fill and send it only while physically being in the Netherlands
- you have to get the special code (by physical letter lol) to the address where you moved to
- no emails, no online. All through a tax agent
and many more small bullshit 18th century vibes in the process.
I hate it, yet with my agents (tax agent - human, and Claude agent that talks to my human instead of me 😅) it was comfortable enough. Just a bit more context switching over the last 6 months. But for almost €12k totally worth it.
