Windows Laptop Audit Findings
A read-only audit of a Windows laptop revealed 290 running processes, with Chrome and Claude consuming significant memory. Recommendations include disabling unnecessary startup apps and managing services to optimize performance.

everyone saw Claude catch a hidden miner on a Mac. so I asked it to audit my Windows laptop, read-only. no miner. the biggest memory hog after Chrome was Claude itself: 3 GB across 13 processes. here is everything else it found in 5 minutes:
the rule: it can look at everything and change nothing.
→ memory: 1.7 GB free out of 16. Chrome 4.6 GB in 26 processes, Claude 3.0, ChatGPT 1.5. the two AI apps alone take almost a third
→ processes: 290 running. Task Manager lists them one by one, Claude grouped them by app, which is how Chrome's 26 showed up
→ startup: 8 apps launch with Windows, including Teams, Steam and an Adobe sync tool
→ services: 13 from outside Microsoft start automatically, including a VPN tunnel and a game's license server
→ scheduled tasks: 11 that aren't Microsoft's, mostly update checkers from Adobe, NVIDIA, Zoom and Google
→ disk: 14.6 GB free on a 96 GB system drive
→ CPU: idle. no miner, thankfully
→ Wi-Fi: 1.8 ms to the router, 0% packet loss. it was never the Wi-Fi. Google DNS answered 2.6x slower than my provider's
what it suggested, in order:
1. turn off startup apps I don't use daily (Task Manager → Startup apps)
2. set the VPN and the game license service to Manual, so they only run when I need them
3. close the desktop AI apps when I'm not using them, or use the browser version
4. move downloads off the system drive
why read-only: an agent that can change settings can also break them. let it look first, then make the changes yourself.
what would it find on yours?
